Newcastle

Newcastle upon Tyne, which is the full name, is located by the River Tyne in the north-east of England, near the border of Scotland. The city is named after the new castle that was built here around the year 1080 which replaced an older defense facility.

Large parts of central Newcastle have retained their medieval street network, which means a lot of narrow alleys that are not wide enough for car traffic.

Tips on sights in the city

Walk along the Tyne Bridge, it helps to give the city its classic silhouette. It was inaugurated in 1928 and was then the host's only single-span bridge. It is a symbol of industrial history and the technological present.

A visit to the Discovery Museum is well worth it! Here you can learn more about science and the city's history. You will find the museum at Blandford Square. They are open every day - and are free!

Newcastle is named after Newcastle Castle Keep, the Norman castle built in 1080. Today the castle is gone but in the same place is Newcastle Castle Keep. The castle was completed in 1178 so it is also old. It is located in the heart of the historic quarter of Castle Garth and is open every day of the week.

The 20 meter high steel statue Angel of the North is one of the most famous sights in the north east of England. Around 33 million visitors come here every year to admire the magnificent statue, which was erected in 1998. It can be found on Durham Road in Gateshead.

Food and drinks

It is said that the entertainment scene in Newcastle is one of England's best. Here you can have dinner with a beautiful view of the river or have a drink at a rooftop bar with a great view. In addition, you have to order a ”Newcastle” and then you get a cold beer named after the city.

There are several areas to have fun in. The Bigg Market is a hot area with many pubs and bars. There you can find Newcastle's oldest pub, The Old George, which dates from 1582. The Quayside area is located on the quay and consists of many old warehouses that have been given new life. The buildings now house top-designed bars, restaurants with outdoor cafes and really nice hotels. Feel free to end an evening here with a walk along the river.
