The Championship, officially known as the EFL Championship, is the second highest division in the English football system and is organized by the English Football League (EFL). The current structure was established in 2004 following a restructuring of the Football League, with the former Division One changing its name to The Championship. This rebranding aimed to give the division a more prestigious image, similar to the English Premier League.
The Championship is known for its competitiveness and unpredictability. With 24 teams competing each season, teams are often evenly matched, making the battle for promotion to the Premier League intense. The two highest placed teams at the end of the season are automatically promoted, while the teams in third to sixth place play off in a playoff for the final promotion place with the final being played at Wembley.
Over the years, several clubs that have competed in The Championship have managed to establish themselves as strong teams in the Premier League. At the same time, the division offers a platform for traditional clubs with great history to regain their place in the top division.
The Championship is considered one of the most challenging leagues in the world, with many matches and a long season that tests the endurance of both players and teams. The large number of supporters who follow the league both on site and via media testify to its importance and popularity in the English and international football context.
