West Ham United is situated in East London and was formed in 1895. Commonly known as the Hammers', the club has experienced limited domestic success in recent years whilst remaining extremely competitive in the English top flight. West Ham major honours include three FA Cup wins as well as the Cup Winners' Cup in 1965.
The club has however contributed to national success with key standout players involved in the 1966 England World Cup winning squad. These talents included England captain Bobby Moore and World Cup-final hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst.
Rumors says that the club colors Claret and Blue came from the fact that one of its first players William Gove won a set of Aston Villa jerseys in a bet and then introduced these in his club. However, this is not confirmed.
The club's former stadium, Boleyn Ground (also called Upton Park) has been their home between 1904-2016, after the first years played their matches on Hermit Road in Canning Town, among other places. But West Ham then sought for renewal.
After the Olympic Games in London 2012, West Ham is now housed in the former Olympic arena and with the new name London Stadium, the modern stadium in east London is their new home.
The club's most legendary player must be considered Bobby Moore, who played a significant role in England's World Cup gold in 1966. Bobby Moore has now also been given the name of the national arena Wembley Stadium's most exclusive lounge, with 1500 seated diners. In addition to Bobby Moore, the English Gold Team also included Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, raised in the Hammers. During the 1960s, the club had a famous era with victories in the FA Cup 1963/64 and the Cup Winners' Cup 1964/65. Truly in tune with England's World Cup glory in 1966.
West Ham is also known in the 2000s for being a club with a good youth academy and has then fostered players such as Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe. All subsequent national team players for England and leading players in Europe's top clubs.
