The club was founded on February 27, 1900 but it was not until 1923 that they became an independent club under the name FC Bayern München. The club picked up some success during the first half of the century, but it was not until the 60s and 70s that "Die Bayern" became a power factor in Germany and abroad in Europe. The big names then were Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Sepp Maier.

In the late 90s and into the present, Bayern Munich has picked up the Bundesliga shield, the trophy that the league winner gets to lift, by far the most times.

The players who have contributed to the success of modern times are Lothar Matthäus, Mikael Ballack, Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller.
