FC Basel was founded in 1893 and since then they have won at least 20 league titles in the domestic league and thus grown into one of the most successful clubs in Switzerland. Their home arena is called St. Jakob-Park and has room for 42,500 supporters. The club's colors are red and blue, with their nicknames RotBlau, FCB or Bebbi (Citizen of Basel).
A former Basel player named Joan Gamper is known for taking inspiration from the club after he later moved to Barcelona and then founded a new football club in Catalonia, FC Barcelona. Both the club colors and the abbreviation FCB then became the same as FC Basel.
The old German big player Ottmar Hitzfeld played for FC Basel between 1971–1975 and became a legend for the club. Another great player for FC Basel is Alexander Frei, who scored many important goals for the club and can also call himself the Swiss national team's top scorer ever.
