The mythical Stanley Cup trophy is awarded each spring to the winner of the National Hockey League (NHL). It is ranked as the oldest trophy in professional sports in North America and is among the most prestigious that a hockey player can win during his career.
The trophys apperance, basically a punch-bowl, is a classic and was created by Lord Stanley of Preston, British governor of Canada in the late 19th century. With this background, the gigantic trophy has after time has passed been given the nickname Lord Stanley and the first award was given as early as 1893.
The playoffs are divided into First round, Second round, Conference finals and Stanley Cup final, each playoff series is decided between teams that compete in the best of seven matches. From the start, 16 teams are involved, divided on each side of the playoff tree. Eastern Conference finals with 8 teams and Western Conference finals with 8 teams.
In the final, the winners of Eastern and Western meet, where finally North America's (and the world?) best hockey team finally gets to lift the Stanley Cup!
