Although there has been horse racing in Ascot since 1711, the meeting we recognise today was established in 1807. The Gold Cup was introduced in this year and is still competed for on Ladies’ Day. Part sporting spectacle, part fashion show and part celebration of the Royal Family, Royal Ascot is a 5-day meeting that runs from Tuesday through to Saturday with Ladies’ Day always assigned to the Thursday.
The event is steeped in tradition, the most charming being the Royal Procession where the Queen and her royal party parade along the track in front of the crowds at 2pm on each day.
For some Brits, a visit to Royal Ascot is an annual fixture in the diary; for overseas visitors it makes for a memory that will last a lifetime – a fascinating and thrilling view into British history & tradition as well as a somewhat amusing peek at how many British people feel about themselves.
