Gilles Villeneuve Circuit - Montreal

Experience Formula 1 - Live at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve!

In Montreal, a Grand Prix has been run every year since 1978 as a part of the Formula 1 World Championship. The track is called Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and was inaugurated as early as 1978 but then under the name Circuit Île Notre-Dame. The tragic death in 1982 for the Canadian racing driver Gilles Villeneuve, however, contributed to a tribute to him, when the same year it was decided that the F1 track would be given a new name, what is today Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The length of the circuit today is 4.36 km and the Canadian Grand Prix is ??held for a total of 70 laps. The fastest lap on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve was run in 2019 by the Finn Valtteri Bottas, with a time of 1: 13,08.

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is located east of downtown Montreal, in Parc Jean-Drapeau. It consists of two islands, Saint Helen's Island and Notre Dame Island. On the latter island, the circuit is located, surrounded by park areas and in the middle there is a lake.

The circuit is perceived as challenged with barriers that run close to the track and with its greatest difficulty in the last chicane before the finish line. It consists of a tight turning surface with an outgoing barrier road that has been given the iconic name "Wall of Champions". The name originated when three F1 legends ran into the wall in 1999, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve (son of the late Gilles Villeneuve). When this happened, the exit barrier was also marketed with a tourist slogan for the region, Bienvenue au Québec (Welcome to Quebec).

Another highlight along the track is the hairpin curve at the 10th curve with a 180 degree turn that can often contribute to the cars spinning out on the catchment area and even skilful overtaking can be seen at this part of the track
