Manchester City - History

After being in the shadow of the arch-rivals Manchester United for many years, Manchester City has in recent years established itself as a top team in the Premier League and has even become the best team in the city.

Manchester City, nicknamed the Citizens, was founded in 1880 under the name St. Mark´s before the team in 1894 changed its name to the current Manchester City. The first time the team became league champions was in 1937. Since then, the league has won on five more occasions, 1968, 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2019. In addition, Manchester City also has five FA Cup victories, four victories in the League Cup and one victory in the former Cup Winners Cup.

For 80 years, between 1923 and 2003, the team played their home games on Maine Road. Since 2003, the team has been housed at Etihad Stadium (also known as the City of Manchester Stadium in public) with space for over 55,000 spectators.

Since its founding, the club has experienced periods of both success and serious adversity. In 1996 they left the Premier League and in 1998 they were down in the third division. Recent seasons City have claimed severeal Premier League titles and domestic cups.

The 2018-2019 season, the Citizens became the first team on the men's side to take a domestic triple during one season; Premier League, League Cup and FA Cup.

Now the light blue part of Manchester is just waiting for a success even in the Champions League where Manchester City has so far reached no more than the quarterfinals.
