Brentford FC was founded in 1889 after a meeting between the two ancient English colleges Oxford and Cambridge. Their goal was to extend the rowing season with football or rugby to keep the rowers going all year round. After voting, it was decided that football would be the choice and Brentford FC was started up. The team had the most successful period in the 1930s with, among other things, victory in the highest league in 1936. They are the only club that has won all their home matches in one season.

The nickname The Bees was inadvertently adopted when a group of students from Borough Road College watched their friend Joe Gettins who then played in Brentford and cheered "buck up Bs". Brentford player Ken Coote is the one with the most matches for the club, he made 559 appearances for the red and white team between 1949–1964 and still holds the club's record.
